Along the shore of Lake Superior, the mottled red sandstone which gives Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore it’s name is some of the oldest stone in the region dating back nearly 1.6 billion years. During the last glacial period 14,000 years ago the Great Lakes were carved into the land by the retreating glaciers.
