A previous night’s temperature freezes the wet surface of the dunes creating a frosted peak whitened into ice crystals. This frozen packed sand is tremendously easier to hike across as opposed to trudging through dry particulate. Though one must still be considerate of the high altitude and 800 foot climb to the top of the highest dune.
