The Rio Grande Gorge cuts through the middle of the New Mexico desert terrain like a hot knife through butter. This isn’t so far from the truth because millions of years ago, the desert split in two by a rift between the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the ranges to the west. Hot lava filled into the crack, and water rushed through. To this day, you can still find hot springs along the river’s banks. View Print Options
