Just outside of Las Vegas is the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The water fills an enormous canyon where the Colorado River is held-in by the Hoover Dam. The rocky and rugged terrain of the Nevada desert is typically a dry and inhabitable place, making the dam necessary for a city like Las Vegas to exist.
