POTD: Epicormic

POTD: Epicormic

Out of the shadows, a seemingly small epicormic shoot juts from the side of the massive Sequoia tree into a dab of sunlight. These dense groves of trees, with their incredible sizes and towering canopies, can block much of the sun from reaching the forest floor. It’s no wonder that when they eventually come tumbling down (after thousands of years), the undergrowth quickly makes use of the open sky and refreshing sun to sprout the seedlings of the next generation.
